STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Strength and conditioning is a core part of Tier I hockey, and every Minutemen team trains with Function and Strength, our official off-ice partner since 2016. Players follow age-appropriate programs that build strength, mobility, speed, and overall durability through the season.
About Our Training Partner — Function and Strength
All VFMM off-ice training is led by Ryan Heickert, a Certified Athletic Trainer with a long background in developing athletes at the junior, college, and professional levels. Ryan’s approach focuses on building strong, functional movement patterns that support performance on the ice and reduce injury risk.
You can expect:
- Structured off-ice sessions throughout the season
- Training built around strength, mobility, conditioning, and recovery
- Clear expectations around attendance and effort
- Coaching that reinforces the habits required to compete at a Tier I pace
Ryan has worked with athletes across the NHL, AHL, NCAA, NLL, and top European leagues — and his philosophy fits the Minutemen standard:
“Don’t practice until you get it perfect; practice until you can’t get it wrong.”

Every player and parent represents the Minutemen, so we expect everyone involved in our program to uphold these standards:

- Communicate directly and respectfully with coaches and team staff.
- Follow rink, league, and team policies.
- Lead by example — on and off the ice.
INFORMATION FOR GOALIES
Goalies play an important role on every Minutemen team, and our program continues to grow its support for goalie development.
Our program is built on effort, accountability, and respect. Every family plays a part in maintaining that culture.
